Come see my living room design plan – I have big ideas to make this a cozy moody and absolutely functional space!
I may or may not already have another unfinished project at the moment butttt…I’m starting another one right away!
Let me tell you why:
We are getting our hardwood flooring installed in THREE weeks – and we want to have most of the painting done by then. Obviously we don’t HAVE to, but it would make life a little easier to just paint with the old carpets under us and not have to worry about ruining our brand new floors.
So here’s the living room right now:
It’s an open room to our kitchen and it’s a room that people will see from most places in the house. It’s kind of central to the home. It’s also a pretty dark room – that little funky octagon window is letting in some light, but more of it is coming from the glass french doors to the left of this picture – they lead to our sunroom.
We decided to embrace the darkness of the room instead of fighting against it. We want to give this room a cozy & moody feel. Since our kitchen is so bright, and it’s in the same space, we think it’ll balance nicely.
This is what we have planned for the room:
Cozy living room design plan:
Ooooh as soon as I put that mood board together I got SO excited for this room to come together!
We’re just doing phase one of the project right now – painting the room dark and lime washing the fireplace. The board & batten and the built in bookshelves will come later! Again – not ready to fully complete the project but trying to get the messy stuff done first.
I’m going to be testing out some moody green/gray paint colors next and I can’t wait to get started!! Major updating coming up soon – without a major price tag! My favorite kind of makeover!

When you described and showed it on IG, I was baffled why you would go dark with the paint. Then you show the mood board and voilà…it makes complete sense. It looks, like everything you do, amazing.
Boy, do I ever need a mood board. How do I get one?😂
Christina says
ha! Maybe I didn’t explain it well! I use PicMonkey to make mine

What’s a mood board and how do we see yours?
Dawn says
OMGosh!!! That room is going to be gorgeous. I never would have thought book cases or a dark wall!!! I can’t wait to see it all come together 🙂
Christina says
yay! Thanks so much! We loved our built-in bookshelves in our last house so we wanted to bring that into this house too!

Hi Christina! I love the plans–that dark color is so well-balanced with the fireplace and built-ins. It makes me rethink all my plans for our house! I’m curious, are those the bookshelves from your prior house? Did you build them yourself, or were they part of the home originally? We’re in the middle of planning ours out and I really love the look of yours!
