Free decorating ideas that anyone can do:
DECLUTTER
OK this isn’t a fun one to start with but I PROMISE you that it’s my most effective “decorating” tool I own!
Once you take away the clutter from a space, you can actually see the surfaces you have to work with. It will give you a better canvas to work with, and you will be much happier with your decorating efforts if you simplify your space first!
Glass jars + greenery
Glass jars and fresh greenery can transform any space! It can add life to little corners of your home, and add some organic shape. I truly believe that no space is complete without some greenery, so I love to add it anywhere I can!
Of course it doesn’t have to be live stems, it can be faux as well! If you have faux stems on hand, then use those.
If it’s winter time, go outside and clip some evergreens to stick in a vase.
If it’s spring or summer, then bring in some flowers or even little branches from a tree.
As for the glass jars – you can use mason jars as a simple and chic way to decorate your home. If you’re looking for more glasses to use, then get creative with your pantry items! Glass oil bottles and pasta sauce containers can look beautiful with some fresh flowers or greenery in them!
TIP: If you group your clippings and jars in a group of 3 or more, it will add a greater visual impact and it will help to fill up more decorative space! This would work really well on a mantel too.
Get creative with linens:
If you’re anything like me, you love picking up cute dishcloths from Hearth & Hand when you’re browsing the aisles of Target. Or is it just me that does this??
If you do that too, then use those linens for something other than wiping up after dinner. I used napkins on top of our mantel, and a nicer turkish towel on our kitchen counter. These linens help to soften a space, and they can also add a little pop of pattern and color.
Move things around (shop your house):
If you haven’t rearranged your home to create a new look for free, you are missing out! Sometimes it just takes moving things around your home to make you feel like you have a completely new look – without spending a dime!
Move furniture from room to room – it can be as big as a couch or love seat, or as little as an end table or lamp.
Swap out rugs and put them into a different room. Do the same with throw pillows and blankets – I promise it will make you feel like you have a brand new space!
Sell things you no longer love
List the things that you don’t love or need anymore, and get some cash for it!
I’ve been listing ALL the things while I’ve been at home and I now have a nice little stash of cash ready for whenever I can get to Homegoods next!
Even if you just need that extra cash for groceries, it will feel so good to let go of the mental weight that comes with holding onto stuff that doesn’t serve your needs anymore!
Rethink household objects:
When you’re looking for free decorating ideas, look no further than your kitchen. Things like pitchers, cutting boards, trays, bowls, napkins, and chargers can be really nice decorative elements.
I used things that were already in my kitchen cabinets to clean up this space on my counter, and make a little decorative moment.
Shop the refrigerator:
As weird as it sounds, produce can actually be beautiful! Instead of keeping it hidden away, put it out in a simple white bowl for an understated decorative element. Think: limes, lemons, apples, pears, or oranges.
Pro tip: this is what a lot of photographers do when they shoot kitchen photos for magazines!
Use up your leftover paint:
Do you have paint cans sitting half-empty in storage? I have way too many!
I mixed two paints I had on hand and made a major statement with our hallway makeover…check out all the details in this post!
Other ways to decorate your home for free (ideas from my talented friends!):
Use free printables:
There are so many bloggers who offer beautiful printables for… FREE! My friend Lauren from Bless’er House has some of my favorites – you can find them here
Paint over an old sign:
If you’re anything like me, then you have a whole stash of leftover paint at your house! You probably also have an old sign that might be sitting in your basement or attic that’s not quite your style anymore.
My friend Cynthia shared her DIY wall art sign on her Instagram (she has the step-by-step tutorial saved in her highlights!)
