Wow – it’s hard to believe another month has passed since our first house update! We’ve been working so hard – and are starting to feel the pressure of being halfway done with renovations before we move in April!
Lots has been going on this month – have you been following on Instagram? I’m using #FixingUp1902 to document all of our adventures with this house – sometimes they’re pretty, sometimes not so much!
Let’s start with the pretty, shall we? Let’s talk about these moldings:
We’re working hard on scraping, sanding, priming and painting (2 coats) on e.v.e.r.y. surface. Holy moly. We’ve only done this in one room so far – there is SO much trim in the house, and I’m kind of dreading all of the other trim that’s still left!
We also repeated this process on the built-in bookshelves. In the picture above, they have been sanded, primed, and have one coat of paint. I will be painting the back of the bookshelves a different color – can’t wait to show them off!
And hello – did you notice those FLOORS?! We ripped up the carpet (knowing there were wood floors underneath) but we had no idea that we would find this amazingness in such great condition underneath:
I swear there were angels singing when I saw them – I was giddy for the rest of the day!!
We ripped out the carpets on the first floor, but haven’t touched the stairs or hallway upstairs yet:
One more shot of the floors:
OK – enough with the pretty pictures. Now for the ugliness that is our kitchen:
Oh boy. The demolition has started, and we’re definitely in the “it’s got to look worse before it looks better” stage. I have such big plans for this kitchen – and right now it seems like it may never get done!!
Look at poor Isaac – wondering “Is this really going to be my house??” Poor kid!
Oh, and then there’s the downstairs bathroom:
Yeah. I don’t even know what to say either! It’s basically a pit of despair. Yikes!
The breezeway is looking a little better after my mom & I ripped down all of the ugly & warped paneling off of the walls. It’s not a nice space (and COLD – it’s not heated):
We also got new garage doors – hooray! The old ones were all rotted out on the bottom – we’re glad to have some nice new garage doors:
And my brother has been working on stripping the wallpaper off of the ceiling in our master bedroom – can you believe this disgusting blood red paint underneath?? What the heck!?
Not exciting, but necessary: our electric system is about halfway done now…we’re having the electrician rip out all of the knob & tube wiring and getting all of the electric updated.
My parents & I took a day trip out to Lancaster to figure out our cabinets – we’re having a true Amish man make them, and I couldn’t be more excited! I think I’ll have to do a post about them separately – I can’t wait to see how they turn out!
In the meantime – I’m now 24 weeks pregnant and starting to get more tired every week. Ugh! Hoping I can hang on – can’t wait to share the next update with you!

Wow! The floors! While a lot of work, it looks like so much fun and love. I really can’t wait to see the progression.

It’s a lot of work, but a lot of fun too Kassandra 🙂
Sam @ Away She Went says
Those floors! I don’t know why you’d ever cover those up with carpet!
Christina says
Totally agree, Sam!! BUT I’m glad they did, because that preserved the wood floors for us 😉

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE those floors!! Heck of a find!! Also, I LOVE that you are getting Amish made cabinets! I can’t wait to see them! I’ve told Travis we need to look into that some day.
Christina says
I can’t wait to see them either haha!! We could get them for thousands less than through the hardware store – and they’re all solid wood (which is not what we could afford at the hardware store). So excited to see them at the end of March!!! 🙂
Emily, Our house now a home says
Those floors! I did not even know pattern and design like that existed. I cannot even imagine the time it took to lay those down. And they are in such stunning shape. I cringe at the person that felt the need to cover those up with carpet. That is one lucky find of yours. The kitchen looks a hot mess for sure, but it has great space and a lot of it too. I can see the potential so much with this house and am so excited to see more! BTW I feel you pain on trim sooooo much. It is worth it though!
Christina says
ahh thanks for the encouragement, Emily! Yes – the kitchen is a total mess!! Yikes!! And we already knew the floors were awesome, but we didn’t know JUST how awesome they’d look all together – crazy!! We were thrilled!!
