I am having so much fun decorating our house for Christmas this year! We’re going to be opening out home to the public this weekend – ahh (read all about that here)!
I have no idea why our house doesn’t have a fireplace (it’s basically screaming for one)…but we don’t. Therefore, we don’t have a beautiful mantel to hang our stockings from. Sigh.
But in literally less than 10 minutes, I hung these up and I love how it looks! So SO easy and cute!
Here’s what you’ll need (affiliate links included)
- A wood ladder (there’s some good options here)
- Thumbtacks
- Stockings (these are the lettered ones…the white ones are at least 5 years old from Ballard Designs clearance)
- Lights (these are the ones I used)
I literally just pushed a thumbtack into the wood (in the back so you can’t see it) and hooked the stockings on it. Then I draped the lights around the top, sides, and bottom. I think the imperfection of the project makes it most charming.
I felt like something was missing in our family room, which is why I originally tried it in there…but once I moved it out to our hallway, I was smitten. We all agree that it should stay out here!
The glow from the lights is so cozy! It’s almost enough to make me OK with not having a roaring fire and a beautiful mantel. Almost. 😉
Up next: Come see how the other side of our hallway is decorated here!

This is a very unique way to display stockings! We purchased our first home back in September and have been slowly but surely decorating room by room in a farmhouse style. I’m loving the inspiration from your site! (:
