We’re knee deep in our kitchen remodel right now, and I have to keep reminding myself that it has to get worse before it gets better! Right? RIGHT? Ha – we’re in that “No, really, we’ll come to your house” phase (not too many visitors want to see this disaster).
Let’s all remember where we started on move-in day:
Mmm – brown brown and MORE BROWN. I tried to lighten it up temporarily by removing some cabinet doors and painting the soffits white. But there was still SO much BROWN.
I shared my kitchen inspiration a little while ago, and this past weekend we decided to get started. We removed the cabinets over the sink, and are LOVING the light we’re getting in the space during the day! We’re planning on having some awesome open shelving on this wall…
And then we took the soffits off of the top of the other cabinets – and this is where we stopped:
Turns out those soffits weren’t as useless as we thought – and they were actually hiding some major pipes and wires. We’re had this open for about a week now, and are trying to figure out different ways to get around this “problem”. I think we have a solution, but we have a few more hoops to jump through first.
It’s good to take some time and really brainstorm possibilities. It’s kind of fun living with it for a little bit – we’ve been able to come up with some fun ideas that we would not have thought of if we tried to do this all at one time!
In the meantime, we continue to use this kitchen heavily – unfinished wood flood and all! I post quite frequently about the project on Instagram (follow #christinaskitchenremodel to see all of the posts leading up to now!) if you want to follow along.
I’ll be posting soon about the next part of our kitchen remodel adventure: those dang FLOORS. Ay yi yi – a headache and a half.
It is going to looks fantastic!!! It already looks so much better. YOu didn’t highlight the appliances…they look great! I can’t wait to see it all done.
That must have been so sad to find those pipes – lol whoops!!! Oh well. Progress is good!!
Good call taking out those upper cabinets. They were really crowding out the sun. Those heat and water pipes can be rerouted without too much trouble.
You never know what kind of surprises you may find when you start a redesign project! That’s why it’s always best to plan for some “unknown” costs in your budget. Good luck!
I love open shelving, I think that will look great up there!
Hi Christina. I love your projects. I am also always looking for small cost projects that make a huge impact. I am actually right now in the process of finishing my kitchen. I want to absolutely recommend you a paint kit for the cabinets. It is on sale now at home depot for about 45 dollars. This is the color that I have used, but they have others too. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Transformations-1-qt-Espresso-Small-Cabinet-Kit-263231/203921566. Then i am changing all the hinges and pulls, about 80$. not bad for a total improvement. I can attach pictures if interested. Now an idea to cover those pipes will be to build on playwood crown molding-it is going to be a tall crown molding -which you can paint the same color as the cabinets. Have fun with your kitchen.
