I am SO excited to share this make-over with you guys – it’s been months in the making and it’s finally finished!! As you should all know by now, we’re living in an apartment attached to my parent’s house. It’s a pretty small space, and we’ve run out of things to make over in our space – so I’ve invaded my mom’s! Of course her & my dad are super supportive of this and we’re all having fun giving some areas of the house some updates.
Here’s what my parent’s living room looked like a few months ago:
Nothing too offensive in here, but it was dark and the colors needed some updating. The drapes were also pretty old-school:
Haha sorry for the pug photo bomb in both pictures
Ready to see what it looks like now?!
I had some trouble taking pictures of this room – the paint looks a lot more “green” than it does in real life…it’s a solid tan color in person!
One of the major things that made the biggest transformation in this room was removing furniture. We took out two big pieces of furniture (the leather armchair and that big table that was in front of the window). Once we took the table away, we were amazed at how much more light the room received. My mom found a spot for them somewhere else in her house, and I think that was a key for making this room fresh and open! We also took out the rug, and it’s amazing how much of a difference that has made!
Of course, that hunter green fireplace had to get painted over (even though my husband disagreed – he loves hunter green and I have to convince him that means he’s stuck in the 90’s).
LOVE the white paint of the fireplace against the tan walls!
We found this plate/bowl at Ross and used it to pull some new colors into the room:
So our color palette was tans, browns, white and a hint of that pretty light blue. Of course we threw in some greenery too – my mom loves her plants!
Do you recognize that flower trough?! It’s from the bridal shower, and now it’s found a permanent home in this room!
I had a lot of fun playing with the mantel – nothing was bought specifically for the mantel, but we “shopped the house” (hers and mine) for objects that would fit with the scale and color scheme.
I love the “mixed” feel of all of it (if you’re interested in knowing where we got these items, I’m sharing at the end of the post).
Here’s what the room looks like from the hallway (right when you walk in the front door):

You wanna’ pop on over to PT Rd one day soon and help me get some Ideas for my fall makeover? I’m redoing it all–taking out old gray tile and adding wood floors, repainting AND I’d love to DIY some projects. You can show it all on your site if you want…AND I’d be glad to PAY YOU some kind of collaboration fee to help me get it done well (it’s hard with time on a teacher’s sched as you know…so I’d be glad to treasure your ideas!) THIS would be fun for me. Think about it!

It looks great! I love the new white mantle and wall color! They look so good together. I love the detailed resource list too. I have the same flower candle holder (#8) except mine’s blue!
The makeover is awesome. It really updates and lightens the space so it’s not dark and heavy. You did a fantastic job.

Wow that is beautiful. Just losing those outdated drapes knocks 30 years off the room.. plus your wall color makes the trim pop. So very pretty.. nice transformation.
