There’s just something about the *smells* of the holiday season.
I love simmering various ingredients in a pot when we’re hosting people for the holidays, or even when we’re sitting at home on a Sunday. It relaxes me just thinking about it!
There are SO many variations of simmer pot recipes, and I really think you can’t go wrong. So use this recipe for yourself, or put it in a canning jar and give it as a gift to the people you love!
In this batch, I used:
-
dried apples
-
ground cinnamon
-
cinnamon sticks
-
nutmeg
-
herbal tea bag
-
pumpkin pie spice
-
whole cloves
-
pine branches
I dried the apples myself – I sliced them very thin, placed them on cookie sheets, and baked them for 10 hours at the lowest heat your oven will allow (mine was 170 degrees). I just cut the pine branches from the bottom of my Christmas tree
All you do is place all of the ingredients in a small pot with 2 cups of water (or apple juice), and simmer on low heat for hours!
I decided to make a few of these up and give them as gifts – and I am sharing the printable tag (with instructions) for you to use as well! There’s a choice of 2 different fonts as well.
Get creative with this! Some other ingredients you can use:
-
orange peels
-
lemon peels
-
allspice
-
anise
-
rosemary
-
bay leaves
Have you ever made simmer potpourri? Will you consider giving it as a gift this year?

I always hear people talking about simmering scents, but I’ve never tried it! I’m totally curious now and may just have to whip something up this afternoon while I’m working from home 🙂

I often use a crock-pot and sit on low using a combination of spices such as cloves, orange peel, vanilla and the scent makes the room wonderful all day and the added nice thing, is that it adds humidty to the dry air.
Mint is also wonderful if you have anyone with migraine headaches for you can keep this in the room with the individual suffering..

I love the fresh aromatic smells that my recipe gives off. I use one fresh orange sliced in wedges, one fresh apple sliced in wedges, one cinnamon stick, and about one tablespoon of cloves, sometimes I add 1 bay leaf and just simmer low on the stove. Fresh autumn crisp, yummy smells will intrigue your little noses and have you sitting and sipping hot coco, coffee or tea and chatting for hours ….that is if you stop in! However, I have always wanted to give these as gifts but didn’t know how to unless I cut the fresh fruit the day of gift giving. Good idea too use dried fruit. My only question is the smell really strong of the fresh citrus? Can you smell the apple’s? Thanks for the post and great gift giving idea…..Love it!
