finished family room with you guys last week! We are in love with how the room turned out. As promised, I’m sharing the details today for my “semi homemade” end table.
I loved sharing ourWould you believe that this adorable little end table originally started out as a discarded drawer? Yep – I bought this drawer at our local ReStore for $6. It was pretty ugly, but I loved that it had simple lines and didn’t have any hardware attached. I wanted to keep this project as simple as possible! Here’s how you can turn a drawer into an end table:
First, I had my husband cut down a piece of spare plywood that we had in the basement to fill in the top of the drawer. I wanted a level surface to work with, so this made that possible:
Since the drawer face was completely plain, I knew I wanted to jazz it up a bit. I’m still loving arrow décor, so I figured I’d do my own version of a geometric print on the drawer face. I measured & marked out the places I’d want to score:
Then I used the Dremel® Micro™8050 tool to get to work by scoring my drawer face. This tool is seriously awesome – it’s really lightweight and it’s perfect for DIYers & crafters (soft grip, LED lighting in the front, charging station, etc.)
I used a paint stick as a straight edge and followed the lines with the Dremel® Micro™8050:
There’s basically a million things you can do with this tool (it can cut, carve, engrave, sand, grind, sharpen, clean and polish). What I did with it is only scratching the surface (hehe – see what I did there??) You can get it at Home Depot or Amazon.
After I engraved the drawer front, I painted it with some crisp white paint. Since I wanted the detailing to stick out, I waited until the white paint dried, and the I used glaze to bring out the carving. In case you haven’t glazed before, you simply wipe it on your surface (making sure it gets in the cracks) and then wipe it off with a damp rag after about 5-10 seconds. Repeat until you have your desired look:
See the wood I put on top? I measured the space out & had Home Depot cut the right size of planks to fit the drawer. I stained them with my favorite stain (used all over our kitchen remodel) and just used wood glue to attach it to the plywood we’d put on top of the drawer.
Then I attached the legs to the bottom (shared the photo here on Instagram). I bought the legs through this website (after searching through Amazon & Home Depot) because I could have them shipped to the store for free. This is the brand and style I got (affiliate link). Make sure you buy the plates that the legs get screwed into as well – they don’t come with the legs!
I knew I wanted some kind of hardware for the front, but I didn’t really feel like buying a handle for something that wouldn’t be a functioning drawer. I love Mandi’s use of leather, so I figured I’d try my hand at it. I bought this (not real leather) belt at the thrift store & cut it to mirror the arrow designs on the side:
Simply screwed it on to the drawer front, and my table was finished!
She now lives in our family room, next to a $25 thrift store chair, and under a $5 yardsale mirror, a painting made by my husband’s brother, and a $1 thrift store frame. I am kind of loving this cozy little corner!
Doesn’t the detailing on the front make it really pop? I’ll be submitting it to the Dremel Sweepstakes – make sure you tag your brilliant projects with #MyBrilliantIdeaSweeps to enter!
