The term “farmhouse style” gets thrown around really lightly – but it’s more than mass manufactured signs + rustic decor pieces. Here’s authentic farmhouse design inspiration, IG accounts to follow, and how to get this style in your home.
FIRST : stop… have you taken the design style quiz yet? It basically shares whether this design style is the best fit for your personality. Click here to try it….people have been saying it’s SO accurate for them!
What is authentic farmhouse design?
While so many of us fell in love with this style through Fixer Upper, it has obviously been around much much longer.
Authentic farmhouse style homes have been living quietly for centuries without anyone thinking they were particularly cute or on trend. There are many elements to farmhouse style – and none of them include mass produced signs from Hobby Lobby. I think so many of us are tired by the commercialized version of farmhouse decor, but there’s so much more to this style that we can draw inspiration from!
Authentic farmhouse style looks like:
- Simplicity
- Spaces that aren’t fussy or fancy. Think : actual farmers can live comfortably here.
- Whites + woods + greenery
- and repeat!
- Vintage pieces
- carefully placed & well worn vintage pieces complement authentic farmhouse style perfectly
- Textures galore
- Shiplap, wide oak floor boards, worn brick, chippy wood, etc.
Here’s a look at some of my favorite Instagram accounts that boast authentic farmhouse style:

If you guys don’t follow Brittany you are in for a TREAT! She is incredibly talented but also the most humble. Her house is a new build on a lakefront property, but it looks like it’s 200 years old. Her style NAILS the authentic farmhouse look and you guys will love following her! I had to include two pictures instead of one for her home…but you have to head to her house to see more!

Chloe lives on a ranch in an actual small town, and she shares her goats and chickens on her IG often. Her house is beautifully designed and you will love following her!
@JoannaGaines
Ok ok this one goes without saying! While Joanna may have brought the trend of farmhouse decor into the spotlight, there is SO much to learn from her designs. Notice how she doesn’t have mass-produced “farmhouse decor” in her home? Instead she brings the feel through textures (hello floors, ceilings & walls!), warm wood tones and greenery. Stunning!
Best farmhouse paint colors:
I wrote a whole post about the best farmhouse wall paint colors and it’s one of my most popular posts on my blog!
Check it out here before you plan your next painting project!
Where to buy farmhouse decor:
For all of of the other posts in my design style series, I was collecting items for shopping guides to show you where to buy the best pieces to complement that design style.
But … I’m not going to do that in this post.
BECAUSE I believe that the pieces you’re finding online aren’t doing justice to the authentic farmhouse style!
If you want to add this style to your home, then I suggest shopping at:
- flea markets
- antique stores
- FB Marketplace/Craigslist
- Reclaimed lumber suppliers
I hope this was helpful to you! If you liked this post, would you please pin this image on Pinterest? It helps for you to be able to reference it later, but also would help other people to discover the post too! Thanks for reading!
