We truly love our staircase, and we were so thrilled that the wood under the terrible carpet was in such good shape. But now that we’ve been living with our wood stairs for almost two years, we’ve decided that we are going to get a runner for our stairs. I’m excited to share our reasons why and our experience with you through my partnership with Carpet One Floor & Home®.
The reality of wood stairs
I’ll be honest – I’ve had reservations about putting a runner in. Visually, I love the wood stairs. I love that they’re original to the house and that they’re in such great condition.
I also have a problem committing to a pattern/color in a space. I love to decorate with a neutral base, so I can switch out things seasonally and as my style changes and evolves. I didn’t want to commit to a pattern or color and not love it in a few years.
But, we’ve got a 1 year old, a 3 year old, a dog and a cat. While our stairs are sturdy, there’s definitely those two squeaky steps that seem to wake our kids up. They’re loud! And as my kids become (slightly) more independent, I don’t want to worry about them slipping down the staircase while they go down on their own. Thank goodness none of us have ever fallen down these stairs (that’s a small miracle with my track record 😉 ) But it’s only a matter of time!
Since I didn’t want to commit to a pattern, I was looking at lighter and neutral carpets. People kept telling me that they wouldn’t recommend that with young kids and pets, and I was worried about that too! But I found out about the “Relax…it’s Lees” brand and I’m so excited to get their carpet installed as a runner on our stairs!
For any of you who are local – I shopped at Barb-Lin Carpet One Floor & Home® in Doylestown for my carpet. Cindy helped me out with the whole process – she was so helpful! After learning more about Relax…it’s Lees, I’m convinced it will be a good choice for our family and our lifestyle.
It’s super durable and promises to stand up to wear and tear that is inevitable with little kids and pets. But what truly sold me is their 25 year stain guarantee – it’s incredible! You can hear all about this guarantee and the carpet here. Seriously such a great option for any family!
I’m thrilled to be making some big changes to this area soon – and of course I’ll be sharing all about it on my blog once it’s done! I’m planning on doing some redecorating and can’t wait to share!
In a few weeks, I’ll be participating in the “Love it with Lees” Room Makeover Contest – and by voting you will be able to enter to win a $500 Homegoods gift card! So exciting!
And just a reminder of how far this space has already come (see all of our before & afters here)
Make sure you’re following along on Instagram and Facebook for some sneak peeks and behind the scenes looks before the big reveal!

Thank you, Christine! It’s been a little too hard to have bare wood stairs with little kids 🙁 But we’re excited about our runner!! Can’t wait to share soon!

My husband made our stairs out of flooring material. It’s super gorgeous! We have a 5 month old and I’m getting pretty worried about all the house proofing we need to do. I can’t imagine covering up our stairs. Look forward to the reveal!

Yes! I love wood stairs and I think they’re beautiful too – I think doing a runner is a nice compromise because it still shows the beautiful wood on the sides of the carpet 🙂 And if you do it the right way, you can remove it in years when your children no longer need it 🙂

So, your wood stairs are completely gorgeous, but I understand why you feel a need to cover them up. Looking forward to seeing the final reveal!

Wow, that carpeting WAS bad:) The wood stairs are beautiful! When we built this house, 4 years ago, I wanted to keep the stairs uncovered as well. But I finally decided on a runner as I didn’t want anyone to fall too. Your carpet runner will look beautiful!
