Back deck makeover – no renovating required! Budget friendly additions + some DIY painting projects and this space has had a major facelift! Thanks to Walmart for sponsoring this blog post – as always, all opinions are always 100% my own.
I can’t wait to share this makeover with you today! Let me tell you – I shared all of this in my Instagram stories the other day, but I know not all of you follow over there.
This back deck…it’s one of the reasons we bought our home! Sure, it’s not new. Yes, it needs to be sanded and refinished. Yes, it needs a new railing. But it’s also sturdy, large, and perfect for outdoor living. Once we stepped onto this deck, we imagined life out here on our country acre with our family. We just love it so much!
Since we built our large garden out back, our “outdoor budget” was mainly taken up by that build. Sadly, even when this is literally my job…budgets do have to exist. 🙃
Eventually, we’d love to:
- sand and re-stain the floor
- medium toned wood is the plan
- replace the railing
- white and black is what we’re thinking
- limewash the brick
- using the same limewash we used on the brick on our fireplace
- paint the siding white
- replace the screen door
- possibly even add a French doors out here someday! We’ll see!
Back deck makeover (no renovations required):
While we have a list of things we know we want to do out here eventually, I knew I could make it look better with a can of paint and some affordable decor pieces.
And look how this transformation took place in just a few days!
I am so in love with the black pergola, and I love how it detracts from the unfinished floors and railings. Doesn’t it look so much more fresh now?
I made a video just to show you guys how this all looks now that it’s all put together. The pictures help, but video is the best way to show this space!
Quite possibly one of my favorite parts of the makeover (that I wasn’t even planning on adding) is this swing! How great is it? I bought it when I was shopping on Walmart.com – it was on sale and I knew it would look so cute on the deck. Not only does it look cute, but it’s also just become the coveted spot for our family!
Affordable summer decor:
Almost everything you see on the table (plus the flower pots, planter, fan) is from Walmart.com. As you know, I’ve been working with them for years now. Even outside of our partnerships, I love shopping them for affordable home decor items that we actually use in our everyday lives. Their summer decor is so cute this year – I really love so much of it! Everything is linked at the bottom of this post if you’re interested in shopping any of the items.
We actually just replaced our old dish set that we’ve had for about 10 years and bought these. I love the speckled finish and the substantial weight of them too. The stoneware fits really well with the other items we have in our kitchen, so we’re thrilled with them all around!
Also, I bought this tray to keep by our door to the back deck. We’re keeping this silverware and some towels in this tray, so we can just bring it right outside when it’s time to eat dinner. It makes life so much easier at dinnertime!
I really can’t be happier with how this back deck makeover came together – and it feels like we can all really enjoy this space together.

I love, love, love the fabulous transformation you did here. Wow, amazing. I have two questions:
1. The swing is gorgeous, but because of the board it’s hanging on, is it strong enough fir an adult?
2. The beautiful ceilings fan, how is it holding up outside? Especially when it rain:snow,
