It can get confusing to figure out what are the best seed companies when there are SO many options online. Here are the best of the best options – all of them are not affiliated with Monsanto or Bayer.
If you haven’t heard of Monsanto before, then you’ve probably heard about cancer-causing Round-Up. Monsanto owns Round-Up, and it doesn’t stop there. They’re responsible for many controversial GMO’s and chemicals that have been linked to cancer.
When purchasing seeds for your own garden, you’re usually looking for quality seeds that aren’t coming from a company that would be supported by a large one like Monsanto (they were actually acquired by Bayer in 2018, so you want to make sure not to associate with companies linked to Bayer either).
But did you know that they actually own a decent amount of companies that distribute seeds to farmers and home gardeners? I learned this last year when we built our garden, and I was careful to research the places we got seeds from.
Seed companies and the Safe Seed Pledge

Some of them are organic, some of them are heirloom, and some of them are just well sourced seeds from small businesses who are ethically running their companies.
Companies came together to sign a “Safe Seed Pledge” – which means:

As of 2018, Johnn’s has sold out. They now sell 15 varieties of seeds that come from Monsanto, including their X3R Red Knight red bell pepper. In a further disapointment, Johnny’s will not disclose which 15 seed varieties are being sourced from Monsanto. They stated they “prefer to address customers concerns directly at time of purchase”.
