I shared my big outdoor patio make-over about 2 weeks ago, and the DIY cedar planked wall was a HUGE part of that make-over.
Here’s all the details of how we put it together:
We measured out the length and height of the wall, and had Lowe’s cut 2×4’s to match those measurements. Then my dad & hubby laid them all out and nailed them together.
The men weren’t too excited to have me stop them to take a picture in the middle of their labor – haha.
We brought it up against the offending wall – and screwed it in to the top:
IThen we started on the fun part – the cedar planking. I first decided to use this wood aging technique (that I also used on my wine rack). I laid all of the planks on the grass and got to work (man I felt old doing this – my back hurt so bad!)
BUT then something weird happened. The wood got these weird “water spots” allllll over the planks!
I was so bummed – but we decided to hang the planks first, and then we went to plan B for the finishing. So we hung the weirdly spotted boards onto the studs. I didn’t take great pictures, but since our wall was slanted, we had to make this little “side” to the wall. We just butted up the corners of the wood to eachother:
So we finally finished hanging the boards, but then I needed to finish the project of painting over the boards. We used a full coverage outdoor paint-stain. Here’s the details if you’re interested:
We put 2 coats on – and it covered beautifully! I later hung a window & my DIY board & batten shutters (tutorials coming soon!) and stood back to admire!
What do you think?? Do you have any unsightly outdoor walls that need covering? Would you ever consider doing a cedar planked wall??

Wow! You made this look so easy. I have an unfinished basement wall and you’ve given me hope that we’ll be able to fix it up without paying an arm and a leg to someone else.
