How to decorate your porch for fall – how to vary heights, add texture, use a variety of plants and pumpkins, and ideas for unconventional planters. This post contains affiliate links.
Fall is finally here! I am loving the cool weather and we’re working on getting into a new routine with our preschool schedule. I can’t wait until it’s truly boots & sweatshirt weather!
And along with all of that? Fall decor! I had a lot of fun sprucing up our porch this year:
EDITED TO ADD: We FINALLY finished this porch!! Come see this crazy makeover!
Man, I had hoped that our storm door would be painted by this fall, and that our deck would be stained. But hey – life happens. We got our side porch stained, but didn’t get out here yet!
But I’m pretty happy with how my fall porch looks, even though it’s absolutely not perfect. So if anyone is like me, and still has work to do on their house…don’t let it deter you from decorating your space and loving it the way it is!
PS – if you like “it’s not perfect and that’s OK” home decor pictures…then you need to follow on Instagram! It’s my favorite place for just keeping it real and sharing everyday views of our house in this season of life.
How to decorate your porch for fall:
- Vary heights
- Use different objects to add height to your fall porch. I put some things on the ground, some a foot or so off of the ground, and then did one layer that was maybe 3 feet off of the ground.
- I use some thrift store stools that I spray painted and a vintage crate to make this easily happen.
- Use different textures
- Adding things like reclaimed wood, hay bales, pumpkins/gourds, and flowers all add to the textures in your fall porch.
- Use varieties of florals/pumpkins
- Just like you want to vary the textures, you also want to give some variety to the actual objects you’re using.
- I used orange pumpkins, but I also used some interesting gourds with fun organic shapes.
- I love mums, but it was fun to venture out a little bit and get some other fun fall foliage this year.
- Use things from other seasons
- Almost everything from our porch has been used across all seasons. Then I’m just able to switch out the florals and natural elements for each season. It’s definitely a thriftier way to decorate, but it makes less of a headache for storing objects for the rest of the year too.
- We also keep our door mat out most of the year too!
SO many questions about this dress in our family picture! It’s super affordable, modest, great for mommas wrangling kiddos, and has POCKETS. Woo!
Doormat is my year-round favorite – and it’s budget friendly. Buy it here!
- Use unconventional items
- Our stools are plant stands, and I love using other items as planters. I used a vintage bucket for mums and vintage enamelware as well.
- Just make sure you ensure for proper drainage when making something unconventional into a planter and you should be good to go!
- Group items in odd numbers
- This is just a general decorating rule – your brain is wired to like things in odd groupings. I love grouping in sets of 3, but you could even do 5 if you have the room/items.
- Buy more than you need
- This may seem silly and frivolous, but buy more than you need. This way, you can play around with things on your porch, and you’ll have options. It’s so annoying to have to run to the store to find “one or two more things” in the middle of a project. If you buy more than you need, then you can play with things in your space and return the things that just don’t fit with the space you have.
So even if you have a front door that needs to be painted, and a deck that needs to be stained…you can still look at your fall front porch and be happy with what you see!

Your whole porch space looks wonderful! I love all the fun gourds, but I especially love the colour of your door! And I totally get the imperfect thing…after putting together my front porch I noticed our deck and railings needed painting again as well. Oh well. Happy fall to you!

So pretty – and I know what you mean about not perfect. But all that beauty distracts from any imperfections:) Great fall styling – such a welcoming porch! (and FYI your collage images above the links aren’t showing up – mine weren’t either and I had to save them off Taryn’s blog and upload them myself – not sure why).
