Summer is HEREEEE! I talked all about how we’re taking things slower this summer (and why) in this post, and it started with a family beach vacation. We all got to celebrate my dad’s 60th birthday, and it was so fun!
I was struck with how excited I was to come home. We had a blast at the beach, but I was so excited to walk through that front door and into our imperfect but perfect for us home.
We’ve been working on amping up our curb appeal since we moved in 2 years ago. In 2015, our front gardens were brought down to bare dirt when we removed overgrown bushes from in front of our porch. I’ve struggled with gardening in the past, and the fact that I have a garden that looks halfway decent is a small miracle to me!
Reminder: this is what it used to look like:
Notice what hasn’t changed? That dang door – ha! I feel like the only time of year that I don’t completely hate my bright blue storm door is in the summer. Just because it’s an acceptable pop of color in a colorful time of year. BUT I have plans to change that color soon, so stay tuned!
I still LOVE our copper mailbox, and I’m so glad I bought it!
And still so thankful for our sweet neighbors who let us take their wood rockers that they weren’t using anymore when we moved in. We sit in those almost every day!
This view is so imperfect and yet so perfect to me! I have grand plans for this space … but it all takes time and money. And we don’t have much of either right now 😉 So we’re DIY’ing and doing small projects until we can save up more money for bigger projects in a few years!
I imagine german smear stone, stained wood deck, painted/stained steps, brick accents, a new wood ceiling, a double wood front door, exterior lighting…the list goes on and on. But again, all in good time!
For now I’m celebrating the fact that my baby plants are thriving, my garden is edged (see that whole tutorial here) and we have lots of life on this porch every day. We love “popsicles on the porch” as a family on hot summer nights. Our simple summer porch decorating is no-fuss and I pray it’s welcoming to our guests!
Tutorial coming shortly for the DIY Welcome sign – it’s SO simple!

Your porch and garden look beautiful! I think german schmear or a whitewash would look great on your stone, but one day at a time is the way to go. I have to say that your porch looks like it’s calling out for a white Amish swing on that wraparound part – maybe someday!
looks great! You have done tons of work the last 2 years! Love the porch plans, the decorating and the new Welcome sign!
Hi Christina! I think your porch looks lovely! What is the most beautiful to me, however, is the the life you’re creating and loving so well on that porch (and your whole house for that matter) while you wait for that ‘someday’. You are so good at loving your family (I’m an IG follower of yours, too) and that’s what they will remember. What you’re doing to the house is just icing on the cake! The advantage to waiting on changes is the time you get to dream and find the good deals 🙂
Janice! That comment completely made my day – that means more to me than you know. Thank you SO much for taking time out of your day to leave that comment for me <3
