Use these tips to add character and coziness to update a concrete porch. This post is sponsored by Walmart & contains affiliate links- all opinions are 100% my own.
The exterior of our home is always a work in progress. We’ve been in our home for almost 3 years now (can you believe it??). One of the biggest reasons we moved to this current home is because we loved the land/property/location so much. The house was in great shape, and just needed our personality infused into it. We’ve been doing that through small projects the last few years, and today’s project is another example of how to take a space from builder grade to cozy in just a few small steps!
Concrete porch update 1: Power wash it
Trust me on this. I know it’s a pain. But it makes SUCH a difference! Move everything out of the space, power wash the concrete, and watch your (free) makeover just from cleaning it!
This is the power washer we have – I highly recommend it! We’ve had it for about 4 years now.
Concrete porch update 2: Consider paint
This one is slightly controversial! I am choosing not to paint our front porch, but I did paint my best friend’s concrete porch last summer. It made a world of difference and has held up really well!
See the details of how I painted + decorated this porch here.
Concrete porch update 3: Add a rug
Just like in any interior room, a rug really helps center the furniture in a space, and helps give it a base to ground it. There’s many affordable options out there for outdoor rugs! I have bought multiple rugs from Walmart before, and I went right to them when I decided to cozy up our concrete front porch this summer.
I love the rug we got – and it comes in a few other colors too!

Concrete porch update 4: Create “walls”
If you don’t have a railing, like our porch, then adding something simple like a picket fence or a railing can help add some personality to a space. When I was shopping for our space, I looked at many options! Here’s a few choices you could consider for your space:
- Purchase antique metal fence sections for a charming look
- Use a wood picket fence (this is what we did). You can stain or paint it!
- Install a vinyl railing/fence
Concrete porch update 5: Create Coziness
Finally, pull it all together with the finishing touches of accessories. I had so much fun accessorizing with items from Walmart Home’s lines – their modern coastal items were so beautiful and looked perfect on our front porch. The price point for these pieces is SO good and helped me be able to add plants, cushions, and planters into my budget because they were priced so well.
I wanted to add: I bought the solar lights linked below from Walmart Home and I was SO excited about them, but sadly we were unable to hang them from our overhang. If you have wood on your ceiling they’d be perfect to hang from a hook! I am not returning them – I am going to find another place for these outside.

I love how you brought everything together. Your porch looks amazing and inviting. For me, there is nothing like have a porch/deck to sit out on and have a cup of coffee. Thanks for sharing your lovely work. I got to visit Walmart, thanks to you
