My Christmas house tour for 2020 – come step inside my home and see how we decorated this year! Lots of budget friendly and simple ideas for you.
Oh boy. 2020 has been a doozy, right? In our house, we’re ending our year on a tired note and also a happy one. I had fun decorating our home for Christmas, but I’m very aware that a “Christmas house tour” seems pretty shallow compared to all of the heaviness that is going on around us. With holiday get-togethers cancelled, people suffering financially, family unable to see each other, people who are sick, or those who are dealing with strained relationships … there’s a lot going on right now.
I hope that I can “invite you in” to my home virtually and give you some simple decor ideas. We’ve simplified our belongings so we don’t have to clean up a LOT of things, but my house usually isn’t this clean. With 3 kids at home alllll day – it’s usually filled with craft projects, dirty dishes, and laundry piles. Remember: don’t compare your everyday life to someone else’s curated pictures. I wasn’t able to take pictures of every room in my house because real life was happening in them … and I didn’t want to take a picture of it!
So welcome, come on in and see how we decorated our home this year:
I made a video walk through of our house and it only took 1 minute and 30 seconds – haha! Come see it all unedited and how the rooms flow together by pressing play:
Christmas House Tour 2020:
I really love this hallway! It was our first “pandemic project” and used all materials we had on hand, so that was extra special. I love the simple addition of (timer) Christmas lights around the mirror, a homemade sign, and an old throw pillow. (See how we made over this hallway here)
Christmas bedroom decor:
Right off this hallway is our bedroom. We kept things simple with some old garland on top of our headboard, and swapped out the covers on our pillows. See more details on our bedroom makeover in this blog post.
Those red plaid pillow cases are so inexpensive and easy to switch out for the seasons! Click here to purchase – under $10!
I also added in an old stocking of mine – my mom cross stitched this for me when I was little.
Christmas Family room decorating:
Now come on out to our family room – I love that we had a finished space to put our tree in this year! Last Christmas, we had just moved back into our home after getting our wood floors installed – and the house still didn’t feel like “us”. What a difference a year makes!
This room has our “family tree”. It’s all the sentimental, homemade and picture ornaments. I love it so much – and I was even able to let the kids decorate it without fixing the ornament placement. Of course Heidi loves to pull all the ornaments off the bottom branches…but we’re working on it.
I don’t love our old tree skirt (it’s burlap and not really my style anymore) so I bought an inexpensive blanket from Target this year and it works so well! I also love that we’ll be able to use it as a fluffy blanket once Christmas is over.
Someday this wall will be brick with a big old barn door …but for now we’re just decorating our shelves simply! The garland on the top is actually a mailbox swag from Walmart a few years ago. It’s the perfect size for this space and it’s got lights on timer so I don’t need to reach up there and turn them on/off!
PS – still love this shelving unit. It’s inexpensive, a good size, and would be perfect for plants in a sunny room. You can purchase it here.
Homeschooling area and living room:
This room is so central to our home, and I just love that we were able to build this space into this room. What once was a long wall with no real purpose has now become so useful and a big part of our daily lives.
We can’t wait to put in built-in book shelves going to the ceiling, but for now it works so well for our needs. If you haven’t seen how we put together this space, you need to check out this blog post.
And notice that nativity set in the middle? That was a wedding gift from my grandparents. So sweet!
I hope you enjoyed coming into my house – even if it was virtually! We love this home and it serves our family well. I hope you realize that this season is not about the decorations hung or the purchases made – but about bringing the love of Jesus into your home. 2020 has been a lot – I really hope you’re able to give yourself some grace, pour yourself some hot chocolate, and reflect on all of the things you have to be thankful for this year.
And just a reminder: it is NOT too late to purchase Simply Advent! Enjoy devotionals written by my husband, see Christmas crafts, simple favorite recipes, and get access to LOTS of extras … click here to see more.
As for me – I am thankful for YOU! Thanks for being here.

I love your home, and the decor is so cozy and warm! When my kids were younger they always wanted to put up our old, tacky Christmas decorations. Now that most of them are moved out of the house, I can decorate minimally!! I’m not used to the simplicity of this decor, but I think it will make decorating a less overwhelming task. My favorite part of decorating during the holiday season is getting my upholstery cleaned, fluffing up the holiday pillows on the couch, and taking a nap after all of the decorating is complete!!
