Summer break is officially here, and we’ve already had our kids home from preschool for a few weeks. We’re adjusting to a summer schedule before baby 3 comes along (just over a week left – ah!). Basically, I’m trying to say that there’s not much decorating going on here lately. I’m sure you’re feeling the same way at your home with the kids home for summer break! I thought I’d show my simple summer decorating on our kitchen table, along with simple tips you can easily incorporate into your own home (all sources at the bottom of this post):
Simple summer farmhouse dining
With kids bringing all of their treasures to all corners of the house this summer, I’m working on keeping my decor really simple.
In our house, this means lots of plants taking the center stage in our decorating.
Keep summer decorating simple with fresh plants & flowers
We are SO happy with our x-back dining chairs – come see all of my best sources for buying them here! Ours go on a great sale often!
Bringing fresh blooms in from outside has been a way to keep costs of decorating to a minimum! We’re spending lots of time outside tending to our new gardens (you guys have been loving the glimpses I’ve been giving on my Instagram page!) so it’s fun to bring some of those fresh flowers inside.
Use patterns & textures you love
Another idea? Break those “rules” for decorating. I recently had someone send me an Instagram message saying “I love that buffalo check – are you getting a head start on fall decorating? Or are you breaking the rules for summer?” Um – I am in no way getting things ready for fall – ha! I love black and white buffalo check and believe it looks great all year round!
Speaking of texture – we LOVE our brick wall! Come see all about it here – how to install it, where to buy it, how much it costs, everything!
Life’s too short to worry about “rules” for decorating. If you love it, find a way to incorporate it into your home!
A reader favorite – these plate ledges have been made by MANY of you! Come see how to make them here – they’re so simple!
Mix faux greenery with real flowers:
You may have some showpiece blooms from your gardens (or a kind neighbor’s garden!) but not enough greenery to make it really work. Try mixing it with some faux greenery to make a bigger impact in your space! I love keeping eucalyptus and magnolia stems on hand to mix into different arrangements for every season.
Finally? Enjoy the summer! Don’t stress about the inside of your home. We live outside so much more during the summer months anyway. Keep things minimal, bring some of the outdoors inside, and don’t be afraid to break those decorating “rules”. Happy summer, friends! I can’t wait to introduce the newest member of our family to you so very soon!
Shop this summer farmhouse dining area look:
We get a LOT of questions about our rug – we love it and can’t recommend it enough! Great for hiding dirt and a wonderfully affordable price point. Shop it here.
Gorgeous and I love the church pew.
Absolutely beautiful home! What is the wall colour? It looks perfect with the white trim and wood accents.
New follower here. Love your style. Oh how I wish you could come to my house and give me some much needed advice. Just painted my 30 year old dining room chairs black and now not so sure what to do with my table and hutch. I was planning on painting the base black and stained dark walnut top. I’m afraid it will make the room look dark. Now I’m stuck.
