Easy DIY Sofa Table:
This is a VERY simple project that makes a VERY big impact.
It’s holding the lamps and canning jars in the photos above, and it’s the perfect holding place for books and drinks while sitting on the couch!
There’s no special tools needed, and no fancy cuts. This is such a simple project that ANYONE can make, I promise!
I first measured the back of our couch, and got wood cut at Home Depot so the table would fall right below the back of the couch. I got 4 2x4s for the legs, one 1×10 for the top of the table, and a 1×4 for the support beam.
What you’ll need to make this DIY sofa table:
- Wood (see below for the wood we used)
- Joint L brackets
- Mending plates
- Stain
I first measured the back of our couch, and got wood cut at Home Depot so the table would fall right below the back of the couch. I got 4 2x4s for the legs, one 1×10 for the top of the table, and a 1×4 for the support beam.
Note: This table is secured tightly between the couch and the wall. It will be wobbly if it’s not. If you’d like something sturdier, I’d suggest buying thicker legs to serve as a base for your sofa table.
We measured 6 inches in from the underside of the top piece, and fastened the 2x4s with brackets.
Then we attached the support beam to the 2x4s:
We also attached these mending plates to secure the 2×4’s together:
Then we stained it – this is the color we used. For tips on how to stain wood the RIGHT way, click here to read everything I learned from a wood working professional!
We let it dry, put it behind the sofa, and set our lamps on it! I used little blocks of leftover wood to elevate the lamps a little, but that’s totally up to you if you want to do that or not.
Just to give you a glimpse into what the couch looks like 90% of the day…

Love it! We have a really tiny room that we’re getting an IKEA daybed for to save space. No room for side tables so I think I’m going to copy your design! I’d like to share your post on my blog tomorrow.
Great job! I’ve been wanting to make something like this for our sofa in the living room. You make it look so simple so that is definitely a kick in the butt to inspire me.
What a fabulous and inexpensive project! I love how the sofa table gives the perfect place to put some lamps and cute accessories! I also LOVE the chevron pillows! I’m stopping by from Inspire Me Please–have a great weekend!
Sweet skinny table! Love the look of a sofa table, you pulled this off perfectly!
This is amazing! PINNING! I love that it is easy, practical, and helps with the whole, “where can I put a lamp” dilemma I always seem to have.
I absolutely love this idea! This is perfect because i have kids who insist on giving me several heart attacks from tripping over pretty much anything but this is nice and neat and out of the way. Beautifully done!
Your family room and sofa table look great! Thanks for linking up at Whatever Goes Wednesday last week. We hope you’ll come by and link up again tomorrow 🙂
How sturdy is the table?
This is an awesome project. Looks easy enough for a non crafty like me to do it.
This looks so good (and easy to do)!! I also like the sofa slipcover—where is that from?
Awesome stuff on here!!
Thanks Jordan! You could definitely do it!! And the slipcover was from uglysofa.com – totally recommend them (and their prices are awesome!)
Love this idea! I could totally use this in my house. Though I would have to put only non-breakables on it, as it would instantly become a cat shelf! On the other hand, maybe that’s not a bad idea…
haha – I think it would make a great cat shelf 🙂
